NOTE: Due to the weather forecast for April 5 (70% chance of rain/snow and a high of 44 F), I have decided to postpone this ride until April 13.
This trip is still in the planning stage as I want to do a reconnaissance trip before I lead it. The plan will be to loop the Withington Wilderness area in the San Mateo mountains. Looking at onX Offroad the route appears to be stock friendly. More details to follow.

UPDATE 30 March 2025
Having conducted my reconnaissance trip, I can report that this route is easy and suitable for stock vehicles with all terrain tires that are in good condition. This route is all about the views and scenery and not so much the difficulty of the route.
My plan is to circumnavigate the Withington Wilderness Area south of Magdalena. Starting in Magdalena, we will travel south along NM 107 before turning west to go through the Rosedale mining area as we climb to the Grassy Lookout (9,650 feet). After some spectacular views, we will continue north along FR 138 passing Tower Peak before reaching the Mount Withington Lookout (10,095 feet). From the lookout we will start out descent to the Monica Saddle and continue along FR 549 and probably end the day’s ride when we reach US 60.
Please be at the meeting point no later than 9:00 AM and air-down. After the drivers’ meeting, we will depart at 9:30 AM. This will be a full day of traveling over 75 miles on dirt roads with a good portion at above 9,000 feet so please plan accordingly – adequate clothing, food, and fuel (you can top off at the Steer Stop in Magdalena). As noted earlier, the scenery is spectacular so do not forget to bring your camera.
I plan on stopping for dinner at the Tumbleweed Diner in Magdalena and everyone is welcome to join me.
