Gordy's Moderate Rock Crawling - Chile Challenge Shakedown

Sat Sep 5, 2026 8:00AM

 Participant Responsibility Notice

New Mexico 4-Wheelers guests and members will be meeting for a group activity as indicated below. Drivers are responsible for the safe operation of their own vehicles and should evaluate obstacles based on their own comfort and experience level and vehicle capability.

This is a volunteer recreational activity. Participants are responsible for their own safety, vehicle operation, and compliance with land-use rules.

As summer winds down and the desert to the south begins to cool off, let's get down to Gordy's again!

Chile Challenge will be a few weeks out, so if you need to do a shakedown run on your rig, here's your chance!

*****

Trail plan for the day includes Levels 3-6 trails:

Lower Amado (L5)

The Great Escape (L3)

The Causeway (L3)

Upper Amado (L3-4)

Fred's Shortcut (L5)

Cat Scratch (L6)

Rig Requirements:

Tires - 35's or larger

Dual lockers - front & rear

Full skid plates & sliders strongly recommended

Winch & recovery points, front & rear; have your winch controller, soft shackles and D-rings handy

Pinstripping guaranteed

Body damage possible - trails include narrow squeezes between large boulders, boulder gardens to crawl through, ledges to climb or descend, and off-camber stretches. (I'm 3 for 3 running Lower Amado with something coming off Nellie every time. I think that trail has it in for my Jeep, LOL. Cat Scratch has also done small-scale damage to rigs.)

*****

We will plan to break for lunch at the exit of Fred's Shortcut. The entrance to Cat Scratch is across the road.

Bring chairs and the usual lunch gear.

The weather will still be warm, so bring plenty of water.

Children and fur babies welcome. Monitoring and caution required as we may have times we are spotting or winching rigs through obstacles.

We will meet around back of the truck stop and air down there before heading to Arch. Trailers can meet us at the kiosk; just let me know ahead of time which spot you'll meet us at.

As always, refer to the NM4W 4x4 Run Preparation Checklist for additional trail prep suggestions.

Happy Trails!
