Participant Responsibility Notice
New Mexico 4-Wheelers guests and members will be meeting for a group activity as indicated below. Drivers are responsible for the safe operation of their own vehicles and should evaluate obstacles based on their own comfort and experience level and vehicle capability.
This is a volunteer recreational activity. Participants are responsible for their own safety, vehicle operation, and compliance with land-use rules.
Who is in on going on an exploratory and possible trail maintenance run with me on La Ventana? This is a fairly easy trail, 5 or less, that has a waterfall and an overlook. It is a trail the club ran yearly 15 - 25 years ago.
Seems that the waterfall and overlook can no longer be found. I couldn't find them back in 2023 and Cliff Meier said he couldn't either. But Frank Whiston did, so they are still there. So let's go see if we can find them! Also, I will be running it backwards from how it is usually done, the views are spectacular!
We will meet at the Family Dollar Store in San Ysidro at 9am. We will leave there by 9:30am after a short drivers meeting. You can fill up at the gas station on the North side of 550 just before the Family Dollar on the South side of 550.
The right turn off 550 for La Ventana is at mile marker 52. We will head up the hill and air down up there. Another driver meeting before we head out.
31" tires should be all that is needed. Rear locker may be helpful, but not required. But places to hook on a strap or winch is needed on the front and back. I use to do this in my '95 YJ on 31s and no lockers.
Bring lunch, chair, water, sunscreen, hat, gloves, and more water. Maybe a whole day. If not, those interested could stop at Turtle Mountain Brewery in Bernalillo before we head home. Please bring a shovel and/or implements to dig with. In 2025 Frank Whiston ran into some trail maintenance in an off camber, sandy portion of the trail. You can see it on his YouTube video. https://youtube.com/shorts/gfGFoKh9W_Q?si=KsrFK3pN04qlfPfG
For those that want to explore, let's go do it!
