Wednesday-- Lost Canyon & Midland Tunnels Run
Led an incredible, cross-country pack of eight Broncos out of Buena Vista for a spectacular day in the Colorado high country. Behind my '71 Early Bronco, the lineup featured a phenomenal mix of generations: a Texas Stroppe Early Bronco, vintage rigs from Nebraska and Washington, three modern 6th-gens (including a nimble 2-door), a visitor from Tennessee, and even a Colorado Bronco Sport.
We tackled Chaffee County Road 398, conquering the steep, boulder-strewn climbs and tight switchbacks up to the historic Columbine Mine area. After taking in the panoramic high-altitude views, we made our descent and added a perfect historical cap to the day—venturing through the iconic, hand-carved Midland Tunnels before making our way back into Buena Vista. A flawless run with great company and an unforgettable mix of classic iron and modern capability.
Jason arrived later on Wednesday but was able to join the night run up Mt. Antero.
Thursday-- Leadville and Mosquito Pass
The Whistons decided to have a leisurely day exploring the shops in Leadville while Jason joined other Broncos to tackle Mosquito Pass. Jason is also doing the night run in the 4 Mile area east of town.
Friday-- Williams/Hancock Pass
This route was a must-do for the Whistons, as Williams Pass opens exclusively during September to protect the fragile, wet high-alpine tundra. Following an 1880s toll road that once carried travelers between St. Elmo and Pitkin, the trail ascends and traverses the Continental Divide, topping out just below 12,000 feet with spectacular views across pristine alpine meadows.
Rated moderate, the trail requires picking solid lines through plenty of boulder fields. On the west side of the pass, we took a quick detour north to explore the historic Alpine Tunnel and its restored telegraph station. Backtracking past the Palisades—where massive granite blocks were hand-carved to support the historic railroad bed across the sheer cliff face—we made our way over Hancock Pass. After descending back into St. Elmo, we aired up and headed into Buena Vista to wrap up an incredible day.
